What Building an Off-Grid Mobility Hub in San Pedro Taught Me
What I learned from helping bring to life a multi-modal, off-grid mobility hub. Support from community partners and innovative design meant that we were able to move from construction to operation in under 4 months (with no permits!).
South Central Power Up Expands to 500 E-Bikes, Advancing Community-Led Mobility in South Los Angeles
South Central Power Up, a community-led electric bicycle lending library, is preparing to double its fleet from 250 to 500 e-bikes. Since launching in 2024, the program has recorded approximately 19,000 trips and more than 34,000 miles across seven community hubs in South Los Angeles.
With another 250 e-bikes in production, the expansion builds on a collaborative effort to improve transportation access. Working alongside Ride On! Bike Shop and Co-Op and People for Mobility Justice (PMJ), Light Transit is supporting the next phase with custom-integrated bicycles, connected technology, and technical expertise.
Built Open, Built to Last
Light Transit exists to cut friction out of micromobility and push the industry toward more openness and flexibility. Instead of reinventing the wheel or locking a city into one proprietary stack, we integrate with best-in-class partners across hardware, software, and operations, and build systems that actually fit the community they're going into.
Meet Light Transit’s CEO, John Tully
John’s passion for micromobility grew out of necessity, and blossomed into nearly two decades growing access to light transit in Southern California and beyond.
